James Wise, LMFT, marriage and family therapist in Winston-Salem, NC

My path to this work is grounded in over three thousand hours of dedicated clinical practice alongside two decades of lay counseling experience — a foundation that shapes how I show up with every client and supervisee.

A relational lens

I view therapy through each client's relational context: we don't exist in a vacuum, and the systems, patterns, and past connections in our lives deeply influence how we navigate the present. In my practice I blend systemic, attachment-based, and trauma-informed care, regularly integrating tools like Solution Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, attachment theory, and the Gottman Method.

How it actually feels

My style is authentic, warm, and down-to-earth. Whether I'm working with individuals, couples, families, or MFT associates in clinical supervision, I focus on creating a supportive environment built on genuine vulnerability, mutual respect, and a good sense of humor.

Where faith fits

If faith is part of how you make sense of your life, it belongs in the room and I'll treat it as real. If it isn't, nothing here requires it. The therapy stays clinical either way — this is a licensed practice, not a ministry, and you should never feel you have to share a belief to be understood.

Life is rooted right here in North Carolina with my wife of over twenty years and our three children. You'll often find me enjoying a good cup of coffee, reading adventure or detective stories, listening to music, or visiting the national parks with my family.

TRAINING & METHODS

What I actually use, and when

Naming the method matters. It lets you ask informed questions and compare practices honestly.

The Gottman Method

Research-based couples work. Useful when conflict has a repeating shape — the same fight in different clothes — and you need concrete repair skills, not just insight.

Attachment Theory

Explains why closeness can feel unsafe and why distance can feel like abandonment. Often the missing context for couples who love each other and still can't settle.

Internal Family Systems

Treats the mind as a system of parts rather than one broken thing. Especially helpful with self-criticism, trauma responses, and the sense of being at war with yourself.

Solution Focused Therapy

Starts from what's already working and builds. Pairs well with supervision and with clients who want momentum rather than a long excavation of the past.

Curious whether we'd work well together?

That's exactly what the first call is for. Fifteen minutes, no cost, no pressure.
